Create a Better Future

Sussy Mercedes, a past patient

Four years ago, Sussy Mercedes, 45, experienced episodes of extreme sadness and thoughts of suicide. Despite the expertise of multiple doctors and various hospitals, no one was able to give her an accurate diagnosis. Fortunately for Sussy, she had a strong and supportive family who continued to help her find the strength to seek help.

“I was staying with my cousin in Mason when I began to experience another horrible episode of depression and suicidal thoughts. My hope was waning. I didn’t want to be alive.” Alarmed, her cousin took her to a local hospital. From there, she was transferred to Lindner Center of HOPE.

“When we got there I was afraid,” Sussy said. “But when we got inside, it didn’t feel like a hospital. It felt homey. I also liked the people. They were very caring.” Sussy’s doctors took her through a comprehensive battery of tests to determine a diagnosis. For the first time, she learned that she has Schizophrenia.

With an accurate diagnosis, and two weeks of treatment, Sussy said that her experience at Lindner Center of HOPE transformed her. “It was the most beautiful experience. I absolutely felt better,” Sussy said. In addition to her clinical care, Sussy drew strength from the Faith Center at the hospital. “Spirituality was very important for my healing,” she said. “Even in the midst of despair there was always a ray of hope.”

Sussy hopes that by speaking out about her journey to wellness, she can help others. “It’s very important to seek help. You can live a normal life. You can create a better future.”
