At the Annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) meeting held May 14-18, Dr. Susan McElroy, Chief Research Officer at Lindner Center of HOPE presented research evidence supporting the broadening of the concept of Bipolar Disorder. Colleagues Dr. Mari Maj, from Italy and Dr. Stephen Strakowski, Professor and Chair at University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health argued that the diagnostic criteria should not be broadened.

Collaboration will bring together regional, national and international experts to improve research, clinical care and education surrounding mood disorders.
Regional and international experts in mood disorders from University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center, Lindner Center of HOPE and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center have joined to form the Cincinnati Mood Disorders Consortium (CMDC).

Lindner Center of HOPE Seeks Participants for New Bipolar Medication Research Trial
Research Institute at Lindner Center of HOPE, in affiliation with the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, is conducting a Bipolar CHOICE (Clinical Health Outcomes Initiative in Comparative Effectiveness), research study to compare the effectiveness of two medications used to treat bipolar disorder.

Dr. Susan McElroy comments on results from a 24-week open-label study of Contrave
Orexigen(R) Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: OREX) today announced results from a 24-week open-label study demonstrating that treatment with Contrave(R) resulted in significant improvements in depressive symptoms that was accompanied by weight loss and improved control of eating in overweight and obese patients with major depression.

Lindner Center of HOPE conducts adolescent bipolar depression study
The Research Institute at Lindner Center of HOPE is currently investigating a treatment option for bipolar depression in adolescents ages 10 to 17.
As part of a global study, the Center’s findings will contribute to data being collected around the world proving or disproving the efficacy of a medication, currently on the market for adults, in adolescents. The medication is considered investigational and is not approved by the United States Food & Drug Administration for this indication.

Post, M.D., head of the Bipolar Collaborative Network, also served as editor for the publication.
