The Harold C. Schott Foundation Eating Disorders Program

Approximately 8 million adolescents and adults in the United States have an eating disorder. These are biologically based illnesses with genetic and neurochemical risk factors. These illnesses are also influenced by cultural or social influences.

Being underweight and malnourished or overweight can pose a number of risks to a patient’s health. Being preoccupied with thoughts and activities related to weight, shape and food may cause substantial impairments in a patient’s overall functioning. Eating disorders often interfere with the ability to engage in normal activities and to even think clearly. Fortunately, effective treatment is available.

The Eating Disorders Program at Lindner Center of HOPE specializes in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, overeating and obesity, compulsive exercising, and related mental health concerns. Treatment for these illnesses are available on an inpatient basis, meaning a hospital stay; an outpatient basis, meaning scheduled appointments with treatment team members; or through participation in research studies.

The Center’s specialized team of professionals works to provide each patient:

  • Individual and group psychotherapy to provide support in learning the skills needed to establish a healthier pattern of eating and to better control mood, anxiety and impulse control problems
  • Daily visits with a psychiatrist
  • Medication management for co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, when appropriate
  • An individualized meal plan and individual and group nutrition counseling
  • Support from a spiritual care counselor
